Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering Department is one of the attractive and important fields among the fields presented in university entrance exam which can be selected by applicants in mathematics and technical fields.  Rapid progress of societies and their ever increasing needs for executing different constructional projects on one side and development of various technologies on the other side requires to move toward improvement by comprehensive planning and training new talents and optimum usage of all tools and facilities.

The field of Civil Engineering consists of different branches such as Structure and Seismic Engineering, Geo Technique (Soil Mechanic) Engineering, Hydraulic Structures and Water Engineering, Offshores, Ports, and Coastal Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.  Students can continue their studies in any one of the above said branches after receiving their bachelor degree in civil engineering.  More details of these branches are given later.

StructureEngineering:

This field deals with design of structural systems with aiming at loads and resistance against various forces.  A structural engineer should pay attention to two matters when designing a structure: First matter is to analyze the resistance of structure against the loads on the structure which includes live load, wind load, snow, human, objects and dead load, earthquake load, and etc. which can be controlled by designing a system that the parts of the structure can tolerate the load.  Second matter is the analysis of effectiveness of the structure, that is, the structure should not have shaken or formation changes out of the tolerated values.

Earthquake Engineering:

The objective of this field is to train engineers who have the knowledge to analyze, design, and monitor on structures against loads arising from earthquake and are able to suggest, as experts, about affairs related to strengthening buildings, water structures, various soil structures (foundation, wall, columns,..), and etc. against earthquake and dynamic loads.  And they should also be able to research enough to solve the problems they encounter with in this field.

Geotechnical Engineering:

This field is one of the most important and practicable fields of civil engineering that can be considered as the basis of the structure engineering.  This field deals with characteristics and specifications of soil and foundation and soil dynamics.  Also, topics such as tunnels, soil dams, sustainability of deep walls, and soil mechanic laboratories are parts of the activities in geotechnical engineering field.

Hydraulic Structures and Water Engineering:

In general, activities in this field, as one of the most important fields in civil engineering, are reviewing the behavior of water flow in nature and analysis and designing structures that are in contact with water and are used in hydraulic buildings.  In fact, this field is a combination of structure and water fields.  Some of different practical activities in this field are River Engineering, Modeling of water flow and Sedimentation around the structures, analysis and designing water structures such as dams and channels and also designing pipe networks for water, wastewater, and transmission lines.  The necessity of this course is obvious with considering the volume of investment in country for water industry and also the great need to collection and maintenance and proper usage of it to supply drinkable water, electricity production and development of agriculture.

Coastal Ports and Marine Structures Engineering:

In general, this field deals with studying and designing offshore and coastal port structures and also analysis of respond of shore to the changes occurred.  Some of the objectives of this field are studying and designing different shore structures such as platforms, piers and harbor utilities and equipment, different piers, wave breaker, offshore platform, coastal walls and coastal protective utilities, brace pillars and harbor installations.

Road and Transportation Engineering:

In this field, principles and modern standards are considered in construction of roads and renovation of old roads.  Also, training of people, who have necessary capabilities for national, regional, and urban transportation planning skills and designing urban transportation systems. In this field, geometric design of different connecting roads (including in town roads, suburban roads, railroads, airports) and matters related to design of pavement, base, management and maintenance and traffic analysis of roads ( improvement of safety  and allocating accident prone) are dealt with.  Also, designing certain specific paths such as tunnels, bridges, and their characteristics are some of the matters discussed in this field.

Environmental Engineering:

Today, many different fields related to protection of environment have been setup.  One of the most valuable of these fields is environmental civil engineering which is the subset of Civil Engineering.  The most important responsibility of the experts in this field is supervision on execution of environmental projects.  To name a few of these projects, we can mention: recognition and control of pollution in water sources, soil and air, designing water and urban and suburban wastewater utilities, control of pollutions produced from solid waste materials and planning and management of environmental plans.  Matters related to loss of heat and thermal energy, treatment of water and air and correction and improvement of places that have been damaged because of damages and industrial pollutions are analyzed by experts in this field.

The above mentioned contents and immediate absorption of graduates of these fields in ministries, organizations and state and non-state companies such as: Consultants Engineering Companies, Construction Companies, etc. clearly show the importance of this field and the need for experts in this field in comparison with other fields in Engineering.

Civil Engineering Group started its activities in Shahab Danesh Institute since Mehr of 1390.  At present time, this group has been profited by 7 faculty members and is using experienced professors with high level of education in Master's, Bachelor, Non-continuous Bachelor, and Associate Degree with proper educational quality.
